A good invisible antiperspirant or deodorant can make or break your day. It’s the difference between feeling uncomfortable and selfconcious all day, or comfortable and confident. We expect them to effectively block our sweat, leave us smelling great, and ensure our clothes aren’t covered in white stains. But not all options on the market check all those boxes. So, which ones do?

According to dermatologists, the best deodorants contain aluminum. Claire Wolinsky, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. She says, “There's a lot of fear around the ingredient of aluminum. From my research, it seems that aluminum has been correlated to being a dangerous ingredient because of two things that were found: Alzheimer's patients had an increase in aluminum in the brain. And number two: that we found breast cancers predominantly in the outer upper quadrant of the breast. So people are concerned that perhaps it's because of a link to the drainage of the lymphatics from the armpit, but for those in medicine that's not a cause and effect.” She explains that, a lot of the time, natural deodorants “have a lot of sugar in them and people end up with yeast infections [under their arms].”

In addition to aluminum, a good deodorant will include some proven skin-loving ingredients that care for the delicate skin under your arms. This is particularly important if you’re someone with sensitive skin, someone who removes underarm hair, or someone who has existing rashes and underarm discomfort. And, when it comes to invisibility, Tiffany Libby, MD, who is a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, says that when you’re shopping for invisible deodorants, “Spray and gel formulations tend to dry more invisibly and without a white residue.”

It’s important to note that antiperspirants and deodorants aren’t necessarily the same thing. While antiperspirants block sweat, deodorants block odor. This solid gel antiperspirant was a firm favorite among the Health team. Not only did it effectively minimize sweat and odor, it didn’t transfer onto our tester’s clothes at all, and even managed to win over someone who doesn’t typically enjoy roll-on deodorants.

After 30 minutes of cardio, the deodorant effectively stopped the smell of the sweat and even after 24 hours of wearing this antiperspirant, one reviewer said, “There was just no scent from my armpits. Even when showering and smelling my clothes, there was no smell at all!”

The texture of Secret Clinical Strength is silky smooth. And while it does roll on wet, it dries clear without clumping. So, just how invisible is it? Our tests showed very little or no transfer at all even after working out and moving around throughout the day.

This product has a strong (but refreshing) fragrance that may not suit everybody.

As an antiperspirant, our tests showed that this product was effective at managing both sweat and smell and held strong even after the 24-hour mark. And, it seems to be aptly named as our tester revealed there were “no noticeable stains on clothes” and he felt “strongly protected after physical activity.”

This product comes is easy to apply and smooths over the skin easily. The formula itself is white when it glides over the skin, but our testers agreed that it didn’t transfer onto clothes and didn’t leave a sticky residue. Our tester (who hasn’t always been a fan of Degree products) said he highly recommends this product and felt fresh and comfortable, even after a jog on the treadmill.

Our testers agreed that this is a great option for those who prefer their deodorant in a spray application. The packaging claims it’s transfer-resistant for up to 100 colors and that held true during our tests. Dove Dry Spray showed up clear from the first moment of application, stayed wet on the skin for a few minutes before drying completely, and didn’t stain any black tops or sports bras afterwards.

It’s worth noting that the label says that it will keep you protected for 48 hours. However, our tests showed that with a normal working day (which included walking through the city, exercise, and riding the subway), it lasted closer to 24 hours. But we still think that makes for an excellent antiperspirant. The fragrance, though pleasant, can eventually mix with the sweat, which is off putting for some users. The added coconut oil and moisturizing ProVitamin B5 means that this product is designed to maintain skin moisture and keep sweat at bay. The drawback is that the formula feels quite wet and slimy before it dries on the skin.

Our tests showed that Secret Derma Plus is best for those who don’t sweat excessively, however. After 24 hours, our tester could smell a bit of sweat which, although not unpleasant, means that the product did not pass the all-important sniff test. We named Biotherma’s Antiperspirant Cream the best cream because it check all of our boxes. There was a very light, fresh scent that was backed up by 24 hours of dryness, even in hot and humid conditions.

The unique dispenser means that you can rub in as much or as little as you like. In the case of our tests, this meant that our tester could apply a smaller amount but rub it in for longer which made for better absorption. Even in hot and humid conditions, there was no transfer onto clothing at all. Our Testing Process

The Health team tested each of the listed deodorants and antiperspirants under the guidance and expert advice of dermatologists. They include:

We spent hours testing each product’s attributes across these four major categories: antiperspirant efficacy, ease of application, scent, and transfer resistance. Each product was put to the test over a 24-hour period.

At the beginning of the 24-hour period, our testers applied the products to clean, dry armpits and then performed 20 minutes of cardio activity in the Health lab. Since antiperspirants temporarily block the sweat glands, the reviewer expected to have minimal to no sweat post-exercise. The antiperspirant was expected to stay effective for 24 hours without the need to reapply or shower.

What to Know About Invisible Deodorant

What Ingredients to Look for in an Invisible Deodorant

Invisible deodorants, specifically, feature a formula that is designed to stay on your skin, rather than transfer onto your clothing. So, you will need something that’s quick drying, non-clumpy and finishes clear. You will also want to keep an eye out for how hard it works to stop the sweat, therefore minimizing how much it will transfer. Dr. Zeichner says, “Deodorants are aluminum free. Aluminum-based salts are necessary to block wetness. So if sweating is an issue, you should select an antiperspirant rather than a straight deodorant. However, antiperspirants also give deodorant benefits.”

Also, if you’re someone who removes their underarm hair, it pays to choose a product that includes some added soothing ingredients. Dr. Libby says to “look for moisturizing ingredients to help hydrate and nourish skin to counteract the potential for irritation.”

Deodorants contain a variety of ingredients, including silver or magnesium, which lower levels of odor causing bacteria. Some deodorants contain acid like glycolic acid which create an inhospitable environment for odor, causing bacteria to live on the skin. Meanwhile, some deodorants contain fragrances that mask odor like a perfume.

What Ingredients to Avoid When Shopping for Invisible Deodorant

As mentioned, if you want to choose a winning invisible deodorant, look out for something that dries clear and is in spray or gel form. Dr. Libby adds, “If you have sensitive skin, avoid exfoliating ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids, or [drying] alcohol and baking soda in deodorants.” Additionally, Dr. Wolinsky says that sometimes natural deodorants aren’t necessarily better than non-aluminum based ones. She says that “natural deodorants very often have a lot of sugar in them and people end up with yeast infections.”

How Much You Can Expect to Pay for Invisible Deodorant

You can expect to pay $10 to $15 for a good quality invisible antiperspirant or deodorant. Of the ones that we tested, the average price was $15, with some coming in under $10 (especially if purchased in a multi-pack). Meanwhile, some of the more premium brands stretched towards $30 per deodorant. Ultimately, it comes down to what works for your body and your budget.

More Invisible Deodorants to Consider

While these products didn’t check all of our boxes, they may still be of interest to you.

Perspirex Clinical Strength: This deodorant went on smoothly and didn’t transfer at all onto a black top. However, it only took a small cardio session before it started to wear off, leaving our tester with sticky armpits and some body odor. At $18 each, we thought this made the product too expensive for its performance.
Tom's Antiperspirant Lavender: With a mild coconut lavender scent, this deodorant slides on dry and stays clear, but our tester said it transfers onto your clothes. The packaging is also slightly misleading as it promises 48-hour coverage but, in reality, sat closer to the 24-hour mark. Since it comes in a pack of three for $21, it’s a good value deodorant—if you can train yourself to put it on after you get dressed.
Stress Secret Response: Although it doesn’t say it on the packet, this product has a slightly floral scent similar to that of a fabric softener. It applied easily under the arm and dried clear. After 24 hours, our tester said the floral scent was still present and slightly mixed with the smell of sweat. The biggest downside to this deodorant is that there was a very obvious transfer onto a black top which is why it didn’t make the cut.

Is it safe to wear deodorant every day?

“Deodorants are safe to use, and the biggest potential risk is an allergy or irritation in the skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. And Dr. Libby agrees, adding, “Yes, it is safe to wear deodorant every day. I recommend applying antiperspirant deodorant in the evening at bedtime, as it helps improve conditions for the active ingredients to enter the sweat duct and work to keep you drier during the day.” Since underarm skin is particularly delicate, consult your doctor or dermatologist to determine if wearing antiperspirant or a specific deodorant is safe for you.

What are the disadvantages of deodorant?

Some deodorants could be too drying and irritate the skin, especially for people who shave or remove hair under their arms. Also, some antiperspirants may contain drying alcohols that are ethanol-based or listed as denatured alcohol, which could cause irritation.

Is it healthier not to use deodorant?

Within this context, it’s important for you to consider what healthy means to you.
